Absolute total magnitudes of all periodic comets are determined. Since the available photometric data are strongly biased by instrumental effects (time-dependent and increasing with decreasing brightness), the list is based on the extreme magnitudes recorded during individual comet apparitions. Brightness dependence on the inverse 4th power of the heliocentric distance is assumed, and empirical corrections are applied to lower values of apparent brightness. The absolute magnitude distribution is found to be substantially different for the Jupiter family and for the Halley-type comets. There are only five statistically significant cases of progressive fading. The brightness decrease is found to be much slower than determined elsewhere, hardly discernible from irregular fluctuations, and affected by orbital changes.
