Exact solutions are obtained for plane gravitational waves under harmonic conditions. The solutions are free from singularities and contain Einstein's approximate solutions for weak fields. A physical interpretation of the solutions is given and their relationship with previous solutions is studied in detail. A more general type of solution incorporating dual polarizations (the Ricci tensor) is also obtained.
