A broken-symmetry theory of gravity has recently been constructed, involving a scalar field φ, and generating the gravitational constant, via a positive bare cosmological constant Λ~ and an interaction term 1/2ɛφ2R, from a Coleman-Weinberg effective potential Veff=1/4λφ4{ln[max(H2, φ2)/σ2]-1/2+const. It is shown that the hypothesis of a chaotic initial state for the universe can lead to inflationary behaviour. The two requirements of sufficient inflation and not too much anisotropy in the cosmological microwave background radiation are met with ɛ<~4×10-3 and λ<~3×10-12.
