Suess showed that tree rings contain a true record of fluctuations in atmospheric 14C/12C ratios, that the fluctuations were outside the errors of measurements and, therefore, the tree rings provide a record of the variations in the cosmic ray production rate and changes in the geochemical distribution of radio-carbon. In this paper the authors discuss briefly the geophysical records of a tree, and suggest that the 10Be content of tree samples may also permit measuring changes in the cosmic ray flux reaching them during the past ≤104 years. This should allow one to deduce maximum changes in the geomagnetic dipole field and solar activity during this period.
