Several campaigns have been performed during the arctic winter 2002/03 to measure atmospheric constituents and to validate satellite observations. As a base for the interpretation of these measurements, the large-scale development of the stratospheric circulation will be shown with special emphasis on the campaign periods. The validation of the ENVISAT atmospheric chemistry instruments by balloon-borne measurements requires a good temporary and spatial coincidence between both measurements. A method to identify the best co-located measurements by using trajectory calcualtions will be described and some examples will be shown.
