In this paper we investigate some unexpected observations of ions, electrons and charged aerosols at the very bottom of Polar Mesosphere Summer Layers (PMSE). Usually, we observe an anti-correlation between ions and electrons, and between electrons and negatively charged aerosol particles, respectively. However, we also have proof of a correlation between these species. These observations can in principle, according to theory, be explained by evaporation of ice particles. We investigate whether this is possible or not based upon the observed temperature structure. We also discuss the radius of the charged aerosols in terms of the evaporation rate of the particles. We then compare the evaporation time with the dominant time constants, in this case recombination and ion diffusion, which determine the structures responsible for the PMSE. An evaporation time scale less than these indicates that the observed positive correlations can indeed be caused by rapid evaporation of ice particles.
