The method of characteristic functions is used to develop a kinetic approach to the analysis of the vertical distribution of the concentrations of various ions, including H(+), He(+), N(+), He(2+), and O(2+). Simple models are developed taking into account temperature variations. Invariant relationships confirmed by experimental data are obtained for maximum heights of absolute and relative ion concentrations. Results indicate that all the light ions in the upper ionosphere are distributed in layers characterized by concentration maximum heights.
