Rotational energy dissipation effects on cataclysmic variable models are discussed. In order to become accreted onto the primary in cataclysmic variables, the disk matter has to dissipate its excess rotational energy in a thin boundary layer (BL). Applying Pringle's BL model and assuming optically thick accretion, soft X-ray luminosities which are several orders brighter than those observed in many systems can be deduced. The influence of an ellipsoidal BL on the spectral energy distribution is investigated, including its dependence on the aspect angle. The BL thickness and reprocessing of the BL radiation over the disk surface are also taken into account. It is concluded that the BL geometry is between the vertically thin model of Pringle and the ellipsoidal BL.
