The interaction between the solar wind and a strongly magnetized planet is reviewed. Processes which lead to the transport of flux, mass, momentum and energy from the solar wind across the magnetopause into the planetary magnetosphere are discussed. Magnetospheric geometry, flow without reconnection, and reconnection at the magnetopause are considered.
