Solar Magnetic Fields: Infrared Lines
Scientific paper
After a short introduction, this paper at first describes the merits of observation of solar magnetic fields in the infrared wavelength region and, then, discusses successively the observations, data and methods of analysis in infrared magneto-sensitive spectral lines, such as He I 10830 Å, Fe I 1.5 μm and Mg I 12 μm. These lines are formed, respectively, in the chromosphere as well as in the deepest and the upper layers of the photosphere. Therefore, they can be used to probe the magnetic fields in a large range of heights in the solar atmosphere. Thereafter, the author introduces the main achievements with magnetic elements and sunspot magnetic fields as examples. In the conclusion some suggestions are proposed for the infrared study of solar magnetic fields.
