The speckles produced in the image of a laser-illuminated object introduce errors in the wavefrontmeasurement by a Shack Hartmann (SH) Wave-Front Sensor (WFS). The speckles are similar to a spatial noise onto the image and contribute to the error in the computation of the image position for each lenslet of the sensor. This speckle error impacts directly the performance of an adaptive optics system. We express this error term for different cases without and with turbulence and show that it is an additive white noise. Based on end to end numerical simulations, we quantify the speckle error and compare it to the turbulent wavefront variance in different turbulence regimes.
