The structure and dynamics of the earth's magnetotail is examined theoretically. Plasma models applicable to the study of the magnetotail (the Vlasov theory, magnetohydrodynamics, and quasi-static MHD theory) are discussed. The static states of the magnetotail, and the theory of stationary and time-dependent convection are described. The stability and dynamic evolution of the magnetotail are studied. The interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere is investigated in terms of plasma physics processes. It is argued that nonideal plasma processes must be involved in any instability mechanism that is able to explain the onset of the fast dynamics phase. The roles of magnetic reconnection and formation of plasmoids in the solar wind/magnetosphere interaction are described.
