The design, operating principle, and scientific aims of GALLEX, a solar-neutrino detector being developed for deep underground installation at Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), are reviewed. The importance of neutrino measurements for solar physics is discussed; the use of Ga to detect neutrinos is explained by analogy to a photographic plate; the results obtained with a prototype detector employing 4.6 tonnes of concentrated GaCl3 solution are summarized; and the 100-tonne GALLEX facility (to be operational in 1990) is described.
