The design of the MERLIN system is considered. The MERLIN system contains 5 outstation telescopes and computer, microwave, and L-band links; the signal transmission and processing for the system are discussed. The capabilities of the system at different frequencies of operation are examined. The system provides continuum observations and polarization and spectral line measurements. Improvements and extensions for the MERLIN are proposed, and the procedures for submitting the observing proposals and the allocation of observing time are described.
