Theoretical models of spin-up and spin-down in weakly magnetic neutron-star/accretion-disk systems are examined in an attempt to explain the spectral behavior of low-mass X-ray binaries such as Sco X-1. Torque-coupled energy flows in the quantitative aligned-rotator model of Ghosh and Lamb (1979), in which balancing material spin-up and magnetic spin-down torques at an equilibrium speed correspond to equal and opposite energy flows from the neutron-star flywheel, are analyzed in detail. The results are shown to explain the large excesses of soft disk X-ray emission over hard blackbody emission and the bimodal quasi-periodic-oscillation and spectral behavior observed in Sco X-1 (Priedhorsky et al., 1986).
