The hydrodynamical perturbations of a galactic disk subject to infall of extragalactic matter at a rate of about 1 solar mass/yr is estimated. The cases of pole-on infall and oblique infall onto a rotating disk are examined, and consequences of such infall for chemical evolution are considered. It is shown that a one-zone model of chemical evolution is incompatible with infall of extragalactic matter, that the contraction of a gaseous disk associated with conservation of angular momentum will result in migration of heavy elements toward the center of the galaxy, and that this migration will facilitate the formation of a radial chemical gradient.
