We will review the existence of dark energy supported by current observations. The characteristic of candidates for dark energy will briefly be introduced. Among these candidates, we will focus on a quintessence-like scalar field as dark energy and-we will analyze the effects of this scalar field on the phenomena of cosmology. The coupling of this scalar field to matter and gauge fields leads to effective modification of the coupling constants and particle masses over time. The observational constraints on the time varying fine structure constant will be analyzed in various models. We will also analyze the effect of this scalar field on the separation of cosmic microwave background peaks by using a parametrization of the dark energy equation of state parameter.
