The Cluster mission provides a unique data set which can be applied to the problem of plasma wave mode identification. Previous data sets obtained by only single and dual satellites allowed the use of a number of limited techniques to determine plasma wave modes, e.g. calculation of Dimensionless Ratios and application of the Minimum Variance Technique. The fusion of the four satellite Cluster data set enables the determination of the plasma wave mode directly from the data. This paper presents a case study of a Magnetosheath crossing where the phase differencing technique is used to identify the observed plasma wave modes.
