The Thermosphere/Ionosphere Nested Grid (TING) Model has been successfully coupled with the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global magnetosphere MHD code. This code coupling enables self-consistent studies of the global energy budget of the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Magnetosphere system to be made. In this paper we will present simulation results of an isolated substorm that occurred on May 20, 1996. It is found that the distribution and magnitude of the high latitude energy deposition in the thermosphere and ionosphere changes greatly when an interactive neutral model is coupled with a magnetospheric model. There is a significant north-south asymmetry in energy flux flowing into the IT system, resulting in hemispheric asymmetries in ionospheric Joule heating and conductivities. It is also found that the global distribution of solar produced ionization plays a significant role in ITM coupling.
