It is noted that, although a number of flares are capable of triggering the emission of a noise storm, in some rare cases flares may also lead to a depression of the radio flux of a preexisting noise storm. Details of this phenomenon are demonstrated at the flare of May 5, 1978, which is thought to provide an instructive example. With the aid of extensive observations during the solar cycle no. 20, a number of further noise storm depressions could be detected whereas chance coincidences with flares could be ruled out by a statistical treatment. Possible mechanisms related to the noise storm depression effect are discussed.
