The effective recombination coefficient can be substantially reduced in the polar E-region in the presence of high electric fields. This is a consequence of the high electron temperatures which have been found to occur under these conditions. Calculations of the total ion production rate and particle heating are directly affected by the reduced recombination coefficient.
