The paper investigates the effects of seven severe auroral events on the equatorial ionosphere selected during the period from July 1958 to June 1960. Ionospheric data for the chain of Indian stations starting from equatorial latitudes and extending up to the mid-latitudes are used, and it is noted that at the equator around noontime, the values of the foF2 parameter decrease, and the noon bite-out phoenomena are enhanced. Towards mid-latitudes the trend is reversed, and thus the Appleton anomaly is also enhanced during disturbed days. The values of the parameter fE(sub s) at the magnetic equator show an increase during disturbed days, which indicates that the eastward equatorial electrojet current is enhanced on disturbed days, and the auroral electrojet current may be coupled to the equatorial electrojet current via the magnetosphere.
