Electric charge distribution on the Giotto spacecraft surface and its near environment are considered in order to assess differential charging possibilities and the magnitude of associated electric potentials. Impact ionization effects on Pioneer Venus orbiter measurements are reviewed, and laboratory investigation of a probe submitted to neutral gas impact is summarized. Evidence suggests that the spacecraft surface can be divided into sections which interact in distinctly different ways with the environment. If the surface is not conductive, differential charging occurs. The surface potentials lie between - 20 and + 20V. The outer surface of the shield floats at a positive potential; surfaces in the wake develop, if insulated, a negative potential. In order to minimize the level of possible interferences, all exposed metallic parts should be electrically connected to the structure and no insulator should be located in the wake.
