THE presence of γ-ray emission from the Galaxy at energies above 100 MeV was first reported by Clark et al.1,2. It has not yet been established whether most of this radiation is a diffuse line flux from the galactic disk or if it arises from a number of weak point sources, and the production mechanism for each case remains poorly understood. In principle, the uncertainty about the production mechanism can be resolved by examining the energy spectrum of the γ-rays with high angular resolution detectors. Such attempts have been made in the energy range 30-300 MeV (refs. 3-6), using multiplate spark chambers. Our experiment was undertaken to study the high energy part of the spectrum between 200 MeV and 10 GeV, using balloon-borne detectors.
