Cosmic Rays: Energy Spectra

Scientific paper

Problems related to the origin of the knee in the PeV region of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum are discussed. The most important ones among them are the shape of spectra for different cosmic ray components at different atmospheric depths, and the variation of the mass composition with primary energy. The knee is a complicated phenomenon, and simple models seem unable to explain its origin.
