An analysis is presented of Glassmeier's (1983) suggestion that ionospheric conductivity variations alone would be sufficient to cause the electric field structure of Pc 4-5 pulsations. The phase and magnitude of ionospheric pulsation electric fields and Pedersen height-integrated conductivity profiles are computed, and the results are compared with those of Glassmeier. It is shown that although spatial conductivity variations may have contributed to the creation of the double resonance, it is unlikely to have been the sole cause.
