The enhancements of the ion source cone population that are observed near geosynchronous orbit in association with substorm activity are discussed, and the spatial extent of the source region of these freshly injected/energized ions is explored. Ion drift dispersion signatures are examined, cases of a strong ion source at the inner edge of the freshly energized substorm plasma are shown, and it is argued that this is evidence for direct injection from the ionosphere.
