The full Poynting vector is worked out in a simplified model of the magnetosphere for one important excitation mechanism of magnetospheric pulsation, the generation of resonant shear Alfven waves in an inhomogeneous plasma by boundary surface waves. The ideas presented by Allan (1982) and Southwood (1975) are synthesized, and it is shown that the Poynting vector can be used as a new indicator of the hydromagnetic wave structure of long-period magnetospheric pulsations in the framework of the model. Simple analytical solutions for a homogeneous plasma are analyzed, and numerical solutions for the full problem are presented. The results are applied to magnetospheric pulsations with periods between 100 and 600 s.
