The Earth has possessed a magnetic field for most of its history. It is therefore strange that the present-day field is changing so rapidly: at the recent rate of decay the magnetic field will be removed altogether in the next 1500 years. If this fall persists, as seems likely, our future magnetic environment would be quite different from that of today. A long term program of observation and development of theory for the origin of the magnetic field are needed in order to understand the processes influencing the magnetic field.
