Earth Ionosphere: Solar Activity Cycles

Scientific paper

Ionospheric models (or numerical maps) usually depend on a solar activity index. The relevant relations are, however, not always the same in the ascending and descending parts of a solar cycle. Cycle 21, distinct from cycle 20, shows a strong "hysteresis" of foF2. In the present paper the authors analyse the behaviour of the parameter M(3000)F2 for the same cycles 20 and 21. The results may be used in a revision of current prediction models and maps.
