The evolution of hot thermal plasma in solar flares is investigated using a single-temperature model applied to continuum emission in the E = 5-13 keV spectral range. Results show a general trend in which the thermal plasma observed in the soft X rays is heated by the nonthermal electrons that emit as the hard X-ray bursts. This general trend is found to be confirmed by the observation of an electron temperature increase at the interval of hard X-ray spikes and a quantitative comparison between thermal energy content and hard X-ray energy input. It is suggested that nonthermal electrons between 10 keV and 30 keV energy may play an important role in pre-burst and post-burst phases.
