The processes leading to the excitation of soft X-ray line spectra are examined in relation to their thermal or nonthermal nature. Results of analyses of calcium spectra from the X-ray Polychromator experiment on the Solar Maximum Mission indicate that the ionization balance during the gradual phase of flares is effectively in the steady-state. In complex flares with multiple impulsive features, it is found that soft X-ray line intensity anomalies are present, which are consistent with the existence of short bursts of nonthermal electrons producing selective excitation of certain lines.
