The excitation of forbidden lines in the shells of planetary nebulae is discussed. The atomic physics of forbidden transitions is reviewed, and the conditions under which such transitions may manifest themselves are described. The excitation of metastable energy states in the shells of planetary nebulae is examined, including the source of the energy within the shell for that excitation. The role of fluorescence in the excitation of forbidden lines in planetary nebulae shells is assessed.
