Regarding an imaging system as a communication channel allows one to characterize it in terms of Shannon's statistical information ideas. We consider here in quantitative terms how atmospheric turbulence degrades the processing of information in astronomical objects that are being imaged by a ground-based telescope. We calculate the maximum information that can be transmitted, in the presence of additive detector noise, by such a telescope, i.e., its information capacity, subject to certain physically relevant constraints of fixed integrated emissive flux and fixed integrated spatial power spectrum.
