Scientific paper

The collection of meteorites from sites in Antarctica and the scientific aims of the collection campaigns are discussed in a general review, with an emphasis on the results of the ANSMET campaign of 1985-1986. The history and logistics of the meteorite campaigns are examined in detail, and maps, tables listing the numbers of meteorites found, and photographs are provided. The importance of meteorites for understanding the origin and evolution of the solar system is indicated, and the unusual characteristics of Antarctic meteorites (such as their smaller average size and high terrestrial ages - up to 700,000 years) are considered.
