The paper concentrates primarily on a review of the detectability and interpretation of short-term solar UV induced responses of middle atmospheric ozone, temperature, and dynamics. The detectability of solar UV induced perturbations in the middle atmosphere, relative to seasonal and endogenic dynamical variations, is discussed. The interpretation of low-latitude ozone and possible temperature responses on the solar rotation time scale is reviewed. The possible application of these or similar data to constrain or test photochemical model predictions is specifically considered.
