It is hypothesized that during the formational phase of the solar system, while the inner planets were still partly molten, an object of approximately Martian mass collided obliquely with the earth, at a speed of more than 20,000 mph; the ensuing explosion ejected a substantial portion of the earth's mass in vaporized form sufficiently far from the parent body to create a vapor belt in orbit around the earth. The cooling and condensing particles of this vapor belt gradually accreted together to form the moon. It is presently noted that while the detailed physics and chemistry of the giant impact hypothesis have yet to be studied, exploratory work done to date reveals no fundamental flaw in the scenario.
