The current situation of women astronomers in Brazil is analyzed based on data available from the Brazilian Astronomical Society. At the end of 2004, 25% of the Society's members were women, from a total of 479 associates. The Society has almost doubled its size in the past 10 years from 227 members in 1994; however, the proportion of female members has increased only slightly (in 1994 women comprised 22.5% of members). Today, 61% of the female astronomers in the Society hold a doctorate/PhD degree, compared with 21% holding master's degrees and 18% holding bachelor's degrees. Ten years ago, only 49% women had doctorate degrees, 37% had master's, and 10% had bachelor's degrees. The employment situation of female astronomers is also discussed. Presently, only 52% of the doctors have permanent positions as professors or researchers-this number was 92% in 1994. Moreover, in 1994 only 4% of the female astronomers with doctorate degree were postdocs, whereas today this proportion reaches 20.5%, indicating the worldwide difficulty in finding permanent positions. These numbers are compared with the situation of our male astronomer colleagues. The percentage of female astronomers in Brazil is compared with the situation in other countries; for example, in 2003, 18.5% of the astronomers in the U.S. were women, showing an increase from 14% in 1992.
