Sudden storm commencements are analyzed using rapid-run magnetograms from eight American zone stations, and the frequent occurrence of the equatorial daytime commencement and its close correlation to commencements in the afternoon side of high latitude are established in the analysis. The results are interpreted as showing the polar origin of the equatorial preliminary reverse impulse and the existence of two types of interaction between the magnetosphere and the shock or discontinuity in the solar wind during sudden storm commencements.
