There exist interesting background gauge field configurations such that Γodd, the parity odd part of the effective action for massive Dirac fermions in 2d+1 dimensions at finite temperature may be obtained exactly. The method of computation resorts to the chiral anomaly of a dimensionally reduced theory. We present an explicit derivation for the Abelian case in 2+1 dimensions, providing an alternative `perturbative' derivation. Then we discuss the general 2d+1 dimensional case. We finally apply our results to two examples: the `mixed' CS term in the Dorey-Mavromatos model of planar superconductivity, and a fixed-charge ensemble in the presence of a magnetic field.
