Possible mechanisms for the concentration of magnetic flux in the solar photosphere in the form of ropes of average magnetic field strengths of about 1500 gauss are discussed. Some upper limits to amplification of magnetic fields by convection are obtained on the assumption that the field strength cannot exceed the value for which the power needed to contain the flux rope is equal to the rate of turbulent energy dissipation. It is shown that the maximum field strength produced by flux concentration is typically an order of magnitude higher than the equipartition limit.
