Simultaneous magnetic field and energetic particle observations from the Imp 6 satellite are used for a statistical study of substorm variations of the magnetic field within the plasma sheet. It is shown that during thinning of the plasma sheet at the substorm expansion phase, slight southward dippings of the magnetic field are quite common along the poleward boundary of the plasma sheet and its horn region. Slight southward field dippings should not be used as supporting evidence for a neutral line formed earthward of the observing site. Analysis of Imp 6 magnetic field observations in the vicinity of the midplane during substorm expansion phase reveals that the formation of a neutral line in the near-earth plasma sheet is far from conclusive
