The theoretical and experimental methods involved in the interferometric
detection of gravitational waves are reviewed and an attempt of
historical analysis is given. The delay line and Fabry-Pérot
techniques for storing light in the interferometer are analyzed together
with the types of noise competing with the gravitational wave signal.
