A brief survey is given of the latest results on the energy spectrum, mass composition and arrival direction distribution of the highest energy cosmic rays. The many attempts to interpret the data are outlined. Significant further data to solve the enigma of the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays will best be achieved through the Pierre Auger Project: the present state of its development is briefly outlined.
