It is well known that photoionization is the main mechanism powering the emission-lines in nebulae. For about 30 years, numerical simulations using photoionization codes have been used to analyze HII regions, planetary nebulae and active galactic nuclei. Although the main observed features are reproduced by photoionization models, some remain unexplained. In this talk, I review the issues associated with photoionization models. O discuss the possible origins for the discrepancies between observational and theoretical results, which could be due to: (a) the models are not realistic enough, (b) an additional energy source is needed. Possible solutions for the different types of objects will be presented
