Near-infrared photometry of planetary nebulae (PNe) allows a clear classification of this type of objects (Whitelock 1985, MNRAS 213, 59; Peña & Torres-Peimbert 1987, RMxAA 14, 534). In addition, the measurements are less influenced by interstellar extinction. This is especially important, since most of these objects lie in or near the galactic plane. We obtained a large sample of PNe observed with DENIS (Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky) in Gunn-I, J and Ks. Photometry on the high resolution images allowed us to carefully remove the stellar background contribution and thus reduce the confusion to a minimum. This is an improvement compared to classical aperture photometry, which often suffers from confusion by very red or strongly reddened background sources. Our results show that the DENIS IJK diagram is more useful than the JHK diagrams used so far. Especially the better separation of the PNe from late type luminous stars (AGBs, Miras...) is remarkable. We also investigate an indication for the formation of two "families" in the distribution of the color indices and try to find correlations of our results to other data like distance, IRAS-fluxes etc.
