The oldest known populations of stars in the Galaxy are members of the globular clusters as well as the field halo. An examination of certain abundance patterns in the globular cluster stars and the field halo stars reveal significant differences between these two old populations: they do not exhibit the same abundance patterns in certain key elements. The elements showing the most striking differences are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sodium, plus the heavier neutron-rich r-process species.
