The possible mechanisms which may lead to the appearance in the midlatitude ionnosphere of rapid and turbulent upwelling events described by Kelley et al. (1991) are considered. It is shown that the most likely process for the generation of these events is the instability of equilibrium in the ionosphere when the midlatitude plasma is supported against gravity by an eastward electric-field component or by a southward neutral wind. It is also suggested that the violent turbulent cases reported by Kelly are a special class of midlatitude spread F events.
