Running in parallel with the program to design and build the Keck 10-meter telescope has been a program to select and build the first set of optical instruments for the telescope. The author discusses the process by which a set of core instruments was selected. He describes the preliminary designs of these instruments and summarizes the present status of the program and indicates which optical instruments have actually been selected for construction.
