The qualitative types of dispersion curves formed by the altitude of the equatorward cutoffs in the diffuse auroral have been studied as a function of energy. It is found that 93 percent of the curves can be classified into one of four categories of dispersion curves, with occurrence probabilities being dependent on the particular local time sector. The curves can be interpreted as resulting from convection field dispersion.
